The Katie Ernstes Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in October 2006 through the Blue River Community Foundation of Shelby County, Indiana.  Katie was a beautiful, vibrant and bright young woman who loved everyone and was loved by everyone.  At the time of her death, Katie was fully involved with life as a 16 year old high school student and was carving her path towards a decidedly certain career in education or design.  To continue the memory of her goals, the Katie Ernstes Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to award a $1000 scholarship each year to a graduating Shelbyville High School student pursuing a college degree at the school of their choosing.

The Katie Ernstes Memorial Scholarship Fund is administered by the Blue River Community Foundation of Shelby County, Indiana.  The foundation is non-profit community corporation created in 1988 by and for the people to help donors of Shelby County make a positive impact on their community.  The foundation awards grant money to non-profit organizations that support the community in the areas of health care, education, arts and culture, and civic and social services.  The foundation also administers a scholarship program each year that awards over 125 scholarships for students pursuing higher education.   The Blue River Community Foundation awarded its first scholarship in 1994 and has awarded over $1.9 million in scholarships to over 1,300 students.
